What Texas Will Pay to Train Your Next Hires

The Texas Workforce Commission runs a programme called Skills for Small Business. It is open to businesses with fewer than 100 employees, it pays up to $1,800 per new employee and up to $900 per existing employee over a twelve-month period, and the training itself is delivered by a local community or technical college with the courses chosen by you.

Answer four questions and see how much of next year's training bill it is likely to cover, and what you would still be paying yourself.

Question 1 of 4 · Headcount

Skills for Small Business is only open to businesses with fewer than 100 employees, so this decides everything else.

Question 2 of 4 · New hires

Full-time, permanent roles only. A hire made up to twelve months before TWC receives the application still counts as new, so people you took on this past year may count too.

Question 3 of 4 · Existing staff

Again, full-time and permanent. Existing employees draw a lower cap than new hires.

Question 4 of 4 · Course price

This matters more than people expect. The programme pays the cost of the training, so a $400 course cannot draw the full $1,800. Your best guess at a community college course price is fine.
